It was a great turnout for Varsity Awards Night on Monday, June 12 in the Westlake Auditorium. Donna Pirro, Director of PE, Health and Athletics, thanked the student athletes, the coaches, Westlake staff and especially the parents for the tremendous dedication and hard work that brought so much success to the 24 varsity teams (22 of which were Scholar Athlete Teams) in the 2016/17 school year.

Many awards were presented throughout the evening. Coaches of each varsity team chose an athlete to honor with one of four awards: “Superior Sportsmanship”, Scholar Athlete”, “Most Improved” and “Outstanding Performer”.

Dozens of students were then recognized for achieving the honor of being selected “All League”, “All Section” or “All Section Honorable Mention". Only 4 athletes were selected for the high honor of “All State”. Caleigh Carr and Kelly Martin were honored for volleyball and Andrew Borrero and Rob DiNota were chosen for football. DiNota was also selected as an All American for lacrosse, a very high honor to achieve.

Five cheerleaders were named by the Universal Cheerleaders Association as All Americans: Dylan Agosto, Sophia Falkenberg, Samantha Nocerito, Anna Sherman and Victoria Moschetta

Also recognized were athletes that competed at regional and state levels.

Girls Volleyball completed their season as Section 1, Class B Champions and were NY State regional finalists.

Boys Lacrosse had an outstanding season winning the titles of Section 1, Class D Champions, NYS Regional Champions, and NY State Finalist.

Cross Country runner Faith Summers and Swimmer Maeve McArdle competed in NY State Championships in their respective sports.

Finally, three Westlake coaches were recognized as Coach of the Year:  Claudio Barbieri (Softball), Carmen Bates (Volleyball), and Hunter Burnard (Boys Lacrosse).

Congratulations to all on another great year in athletics.
