55 Students Join National Honor Society

On Thursday, January 9, 55 juniors and seniors were inducted into Westlake High School's chapter of the National Honor Society in a ceremony hosted by our new NHS Advisors Jennifer Avella and Vincent Iovane. Also joining inductees and their families were Dr. Peter Giarrizzo, Superintendent of Schools, Principal Keith Schenker, Assistant Principal Dan Brady, and Dr. Adam Bronstein. As has become tradition, the Westlake Concert Band performed and as for a special treat, Susanna Palumbo delighted audiences with a solo performance of the National Anthem.

To be considered for admission, students must demonstrate a commitment to the four pillars of the National Honor Society -- scholarship, character, service and leadership. To be inducted, candidates must have a cumulative average of 88 or better in all subjects from freshman through the first marking period of their junior or senior year. Additionally, students must submit teacher recommendations attesting to their high moral and ethical character, have completed a minimum of 40 hours of service to the school or community and be actively involved in a minimum of three different activities in or out of school.

At the end of the ceremony, Principal Keith Schenker was inducted as an honorary member in celebration of his retirement at the end of the school year.
