National Honor Society
The National Honor Society recognizes students who excel in school. Membership in local chapters is an honor bestowed upon a student. A Faculty Council selects members based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members must continue to demonstrate these qualities. To become a member of the National Honor Society is truly an honor. The academic average necessary to be considered for membership is 88 (not rounded). A student is academically eligible if they have an 88 average or better in all subjects from the beginning of their freshman year through the first marking period of either their junior or senior year, depending on when they apply. In addition to academics, each student must demonstrate character, service, and leadership.
Character- The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. The student must also adhere to the school rules and policies. Students must select two high school faculty members to address this pillar on their behalf.
Service- this quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. Students are expected to demonstrate a pattern and commitment to serve rather than isolated projects. Acceptable service must be completed with the proper signatures by October 31st, 2026, and must be received in the Guidance Office no later than the end of the first marking period (November 6th, 2026). Forgetting to submit the service hours by the due date is not an acceptable excuse. Students will need a minimum of 40 hours of service to be eligible for the NHS. Students with questions about the acceptability of their service should speak with the advisor well before the NHS process.
Leadership- Student leaders are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea contributors, dependable, and people who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can come from school or community activities, including working with or for others. The student must have been actively engaged in at least THREE different activities, one of which can take place outside of Westlake High School, since the beginning of their freshman year. Of the three activities, AT LEAST ONE MUST BE IN THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR.
